T.E.A. Party: An example of how regular [awesome] people can make a difference.

IMGP0360

Thoughts on the Local Tea Party

One of my good friends not only attended a T.E.A. Party…she organized one in her own community.

From Megan C:

On March 13, 2009, Glenn Beck, a radio and television opinion personality (note: NOT journalist), started a movement called The 912 Project. It was a call for us to return to the people we were on September 12, 2001. For a little while after the terrorist attacks, we were not Republicans and Democrats and Independents; we were not Conservative-Right-Wing-Wack-Jobs or Liberal-Left-Wing-Nuts. We were Americans, standing united against all enemies. We were proud of our flag and our history. We were not ashamed to be called Americans. And we returned, for a little while, to the simpler things in life.

Part of the 912 Project is to return to those values and principles that were so ingrained in our Founding Fathers when they wrote one of the most amazing documents in human history: The Constitution of the United States of America. (For more information: www.the912project.com)

I was trying to find a viewing party in my area for the 912 Project roll out, but couldn’t find one that was convenient to my area. I also wanted to prove that I wasn’t alone, and that there were more people in my little county that were fed up and felt the way I did.

So…I started a group.

My little political action group here in Sonoma County that I started (takes a bow) put on a Tea Party protest for Tax Day. We have about 30 regular members, with about 5 core members who really facilitate things and keep it going.

Well, they took it upon themselves to organize a Tea Party for the national movement.

I expected perhaps 100 protesters. Imagine my surprise when it turned out that there were approximately 600 in our downtown square with signs and banners.

We had people from age 5 years to 85 years old.

We had all ranges of races, ages, and political leanings.

Of course, the Republican party glommed on at the end, as did other conservative movements.

The core of the movement though was my [non-partisan]  group. They had me get up and speak at the beginning of the event. I was introduced as "the young woman who is responsible for all of you being here today…who goes to school four nights a week, and still helped inspire this event…" I stated that yes, I do go to school four nights a week, as well as dialysis six days a week; and that the turnout was more than I could ever have hoped for…(insert sniff here)…And that it was an incredible vision to see so many people willing to put aside politics and pull together.

We got a lot of support from the drivers on the main road, and it was fantastic. It was inspiring.

Later, I was interviewed by the local paper:

I said a lot more than was used. I made it clear that it was neither a Republican nor Democrat event.

I think that it’s a damn shame, however, that KFTY-50, the local news station, did not cover the event.
(Photos and a video here)

Meg C’s incredible TEA party is not the only one that didn’t get adequate coverage.

Video | Best of T.E.A. Party

The Power of the Poster

When conservatives want to protest, they really know how to do it: grassroots and all across the country.

I’m frankly, amazed. I can’t believe what happened yesterday.

All over America people were discussing the issues! And showing off the Power of the Sign!  … (I have a secret/rhetorical love affair with signs).

This is from the Dallas party. For more go to: http://nicedeb.wordpress.com (scroll through her collection of posts, it’s great).

Money and Bully = Neutered Marriage in Vermont

intimidationVT Law Represents Legislature not People

Beetle Babee and Drew from UFI interviewed Dr. Craig Benson from Vermont. He had some very interesting things to say. Go here for the whole interview. Dr. B discusses the money and bullying involved in the decision.

a quote from Dr. B:

Now let me describe for you what those legislators consider talking and listening. They didn’t listen for civil unions. The public polls were three to one against same sex marriage or anything like it, and they did it anyway.

Then they set up two commissions for the following two legislative years, that by the way could not be amended, or have their membership changed by any succeeding legislature. Two commissions to review civil unions, and the only people that were allowed on the commissions were the people who invented and made civil unions happen, and they were supposed to give reports as to how well the institution was working.

Then when they wanted to discuss the issue again a year and a half ago, they set up a marriage commission to investigate not whether civil unions were ok, but whether it’s time to upgrade civil unions to same sex marriage, and they filled the entire commission with people who had already announced to be supporters of same sex marriage.

They embarrassed themselves so much by that that even the major newspapers in the state were starting to say, “Shame on you!” you know, for this obvious set up and kangaroo commission thing. And then, when they come to actually doing the law, they don’t bother to do it at a time when we can talk to them and they do it so fast we CAN’T talk to them.

In the midst of that, they skipped or refused to do a non-binding referendum which is Vermont’s only option for letting the people speak on an issue. We can’t put something into law, but they can put a question to the state that measures the opinion. They refused to do that. From their point of view it was time for this to happen and they were going to make it happen. It had nothing to do with citizens and everything to do with the oligarchy that sits at our state capitol.

Marriage: a special kind of responsibility that benefits society.

marriage-bakes-its-own-bread1looks like this:

I love Subway. I haven’t been in a while, but the other day I stopped to get a sandwich. 12 in, italian herb and cheese, turkey, pepper jack cheese, lettuce, toms, lots of black olives (tons really), a couple jalepenos, oil & vinegar, salt and pepper, to go.

I was starving, but just as I got out of my car another family walked into the restaurant. I had to wait. A long time. But I didn’t mind because this is what I got to witness:

An older couple with an adult daughter who had downs syndrome. While they waited for the subway sandwich artist to finish making some sort of seafood concoction, the husband joked with his wife about how much he could eat vs. how much he could help her eat. The daughter wondered if she could eat a footlong sandwich. They reassured and encouraged her. They were laughing while they were waiting. They were talking. The husband and wife were flirting (i love it when old people flirt). They were loving what they created together, both their daughter and their life.

I thought: how joyous this girl has her two parents, one of each gender, devoted to her care and happiness for her whole life.  Years over years over days and days of love and happiness and heartache and sadness all combined to create an off-handed moment of marriage in a subway sandwich shop.

i believe in marriage 1

The Truth: Marriage is One Man and One Woman.

the children of Iowa and Vermont are the ones who will suffer.

….but at least the adults will be happy (and have hospital visitation rights).

Vermont Update and Iowa Supreme court Neuters Marriage

Marriage Shattered in Iowa

The Iowa supreme court has inserted a sexual orientation requirement into marriage, where there wasn’t one before.

Of course, even though marriage is a social contract, no one wants to let the people vote to decide how their society is organized.

Read the summary I wrote at Beetle Babee

Also read Beetle Babee’s commentary on the situation in Vermont, which I think is an interesting commentary on the situation all over.

Video| This is Marriage: The Finale (for right now)

It’s that simple.

This video comes from our delightful friend, and marriage activist, Pearl.

From Beetle:

What will you do to secure your children’s future? Your family’s future? Your country’s future? Your government’s future? Your future grand-children’s future?

It can be daunting and intimidating to face such a virulent, violent rage that is at the core of the homosexual movement.

But take heart! There are others like you, who cherish marriage as a union between one man and one woman, who are blogging, Twittering, Facebooking, MySpacing, and commenting on all of the above. Awareness is key. And you can easily help to raise awareness.
