More Donors Needed| Maine’s Population Is Less than the City of Sacramento

Stand For Marriage Maine needs help! Their coffers have run completely dry and we still have a month to go in the campaign.  Maine is the second state that has had the opportunity to actually vote on their marriage law.  If we lose in Maine, the opposition will be able to say that people voted gay marriage in.

I was on twitter yesterday and saw a link go by with the comment “I’m obsessively compulsively hitting refresh—donations are pouring in for equality!”  I went to the link and they had a goal of 30,000.00 with a graphic showing how much had been donated.  I looked at the number and hit refresh.  Every time I refreshed, the number increased.  In the five minutes that I monitored the page, the amount had risen thousands of dollars.  Imagine what damage they can do with that kind of firepower unopposed.

The opposition is martialing it’s forces and donations are pouring in to their coffers from gay marriage advocates all over California and other states nationwide.  After their stinging loss in California, they can’t afford to lose Maine.  They’re pouring all their attention and resources into the state hoping to tip the election.  There is a dire need for donations.  We can’t afford to lose this fight.  You can’t protect marriage with empty air.  Please forward this message to friends, neighbors, churches, ANYONE who can help! and let’s get them the help they need to win.

Help a State Out

The battle in Maine is heating up. Earlier this summer, the state legislature voted to neuter marriage in the state. Because enough signatures were gathered, the citizens will get to vote this November to veto the law. But they need help.

Because most/all of us do not live in Maine, our goal is to help get information out.

One way we can do this is by bumping up pro-marriage sites (so that when Maine citizens do a Google search, they are able to find good sources of information).

What you can do:

1. The most important thing we can do is donate to the Stand For Marriage cause. Click here and then here.

2. Post the Stand for Marriage button on your blog. Because it links to the "Stand for Marriage" site, it will help its rankings and searchability. Copy and paste the following code into a text box (for wordpress), or an html box (for blogger):

Marriage is on the ballot in Maine this year! As hundreds of people from across the United States gave to help pass Proposition 8, now is our opportunity to assist Maine’s citizens. Just as it occurs in California, legislators in other states also ignore the desires of the people and succumb to pressure from gay marriage activists, passing same-sex marriage legislation. This is what happened in Maine.

Fortunately, the Maine constitution gives voters the final say. Over 100,000 Mainers signed petitions to put this issue on the ballot as Question 1.

A Yes vote on Question 1 this November will preserve traditional marriage and veto the legislative enactment of same-sex marriage.

The outcome of the election in Maine has profound implications for the nation, and for us in California. Never has the homosexual community been able to convince voters to support their position at the ballot box. But they have a chance to do so in Maine.

Polling shows the race to be close, and our opponents have some key advantages. Homosexual activists have been working to build a grassroots organization in the state for the past five years. They have the support of Governor Baldacci, who recently headlined a major fundraising event, as well as the Democratic legislative leaders. They are receiving a massive infusion of cash and volunteers from throughout the country.

The stakes are high, because a victory in Maine by gay marriage activists will be trumpeted as a sign that the mood of the country has changed. Despite losing all 30 prior campaigns around the nation, same-sex advocates have been able to convince the media that it is “inevitable” that homosexual marriage will soon be the law of the land.

A victory in Maine would give them the “proof” they have been seeking and will encourage the media and our opponents to write marriage off as a relic of history.

If marriage loses in Maine, the push to annul your hard work in California will be significantly impacted. We can expect a full-scale assault on Proposition 8 in every forum – legislative, judicial and at the ballot box. If homosexual marriage wins in Maine, we can be certain that hopes will be buoyed, and tens of millions in dollars will follow to rip traditional marriage from California’s constitution.

The importance of the outcome of Question 1 in Maine has not been lost on our opponents. Already, Equality California and the Courage Campaign are directing massive funding and volunteer support to Maine. They, and gay activist groups around the nation, are urging all their supporters to make Maine the battleground this year. They are encouraging their supporters to take a “vacation” in Maine – spending a week there walking precincts and volunteering in the No on Question 1 campaign. Those who cannot travel to Maine from California are organizing phone banks where gay activists telephone Maine voters to encourage them to oppose Question 1.

Thousands of calls have already been made. And, of course, these groups are making large direct cash donations to our opponents and urging their members to do the same. Because of the infusion of funds from across the country, the No on Question 1 effort has been on television for three weeks now. Their ads portray homosexual marriage as normal, natural, fair and equitable. The underlying message of their ads, of course, is that if you oppose gay marriage you are a bigot.

The good news is that the Yes on Question 1 campaign is mounting a strong defense of traditional marriage. In fact, they have retained the same consulting firm – Schubert Flint Public Affairs – that worked with ProtectMarriage.com to pass Proposition 8 in California.

The Stand For Marriage Maine committee has the strong support of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland (which covers the entire state of Maine), the evangelical community, local LDS activists and others across the state. National groups including the National Organization for Marriage, Family Research Council Action and Focus on the Family are making Maine a priority.

Stand for Marriage Maine began their own television advertising campaign today. Here is a link to their first spot. However, they only have the funds to keep this ad on the air for two weeks.

They must raise $200,000 right away to keep their ads on the air. Maine is a very small state. It is not possible to raise the necessary $3-5 million solely from donors in Maine to successfully preserve marriage. This is why the Stand For Marriage Maine Committee has asked for our help. Will you please consider making a donation to Stand For Marriage Maine today?

I know that many of you gave sacrificially for the passage of Proposition 8, and I risk offending some by this request. However, some of you may wish to return the favor that was offered to our Prop 8 campaign from people across the country. Whether you can afford to give $10 or $10,000 — please make your gift today.
